Laindon Shopping Centre plans submitted
A planning application for the regeneration of Laindon Shopping Centre has been lodged.
Swan Housing Association announced on 17 November it had submitted proposals for the centre to Basildon Council. They include designs for a new high street, new retail space and parking.
Plans also include 86 houses and 138 flats in a mix of one, two, three and four-bedroom homes.
A new health centre would also be delivered in partnership with the NHS, along with new landscaped public realm.
Swan plans to open a new office on the site, relocating its Essex operations from Billericay.
“The local community has waited too long for the redevelopment of the Laindon Shopping Centre,” said Geoff Pearce, Swan’s executive director of regeneration and development.
“At Swan we’re committed to finally bringing about this regeneration and are convinced that our plans are both viable, and will bring a vibrant shopping area back to Laindon. We are also moving our main Essex office from Billericay to Laindon, demonstrating our commitment to this scheme.”
Swan held 11 pre-application consultation events with local residents and stakeholders, including canvassing through surveys and vision workshops held in March 2016. In July 2016, the emerging plans for the site were displayed and in September the masterplan was showcased.
“More 1,250 people attended these consultation events,” Pearce told BaSE.
He added that 83% of those who submitted feedback supported the masterplan, and 69% said the proposal for a new high street would make Laindon more inviting to residents and businesses.
“The project team has taken on board the feedback received throughout the pre-application period, and we believe that our plans reflect the community’s vision,” Pearce concluded.
A decision on the application is expected in spring 2017.
