Councils launch fresh air initiative
Residents and businesses in south Essex could breathe easier following the launch of a new campaign to improve air quality in the region.
Basildon Borough Council, Essex County Council and Rochford District Council teamed up to launch the Clean Air Campaign, to coincide with national Clean Air Day this summer.
The councils are calling on residents and businesses to make small day-to-day changes to help make a big impact on air quality in south Essex.
Council officers ran stalls at Eastgate Shopping Centre in Basildon to help provide simple tips on help to improve air quality in their local area, including checking travel updates to avoid traffic hotspots, leaving cars at home and introducing cycle to work and school schemes.
Kevin Blake, Basildon Council's chairman of the leisure, culture and environment committee, said: "Improving air quality in south Essex is a priority for all of us and by working together with our partners we plan to find out more about how we can achieve that.
"National Clean Air Day is an ideal opportunity to start thinking about the little changes we can each make to improve air quality like taking part in bike to work schemes and using public transport to help reduce the numbers of cars on our roads."
