Memorials rehomed on development site
Social housing provider Swan has preserved two memorials as works progress on its regeneration of the Laindon Shopping Centre and creation of the new Laindon Place.
To allow construction of the new public realm in which both the Laindon War Memorial and Royal Silver Jubilee Fountain will be set, both were moved on 7-8 August.
The War Memorial and Fountain will be moved to temporary locations before both pieces are reinstated as part of a reinvigorated public realm in August 2020.
The Laindon War Memorial will be installed by the temporary retail area close to the Laindon Health Centre, so it can be honoured on Remembrance Day and throughout the year. The fountain will be stored safely on site.
Geoff Pearce, executive director of regeneration and development at Swan, said: “We have been working closely with local residents and community stakeholders to ensure these important monuments are able to be re-sited before taking centre stage at Laindon Place.
“As works have progressed quickly, this temporary re-siting will allow us to deliver a new high street, shops, homes and health centre, whilst ensuring the Laindon War Memorial can continue to be honoured at Remembrance Day and throughout the year by the local community. An appropriate event will also be arranged to celebrate their return to Laindon Place in 2020.”
