Basildon at 70 events
Celebrations marking Basildon’s 70th birthday continue with more events including Pride, Sporting Superstars, and Basildon Arts Week taking place in the coming weeks.
The Basildon Pride parade and event takes place on Saturday, 14 September, with the parade leaving from the town centre, and ending at Gloucester Park. There will also be a variety of entertainment for all ages with Essex Radio presenter Su Harrison, the Musical Theatre Pro and choreographer Jake Hunter and King Me winner and Drag King Joey Bambino taking part.
On 20 September, Basildon Borough Twinning Association and Woodlands School are inviting 70 competitors, in four different age groups and for both sexes, to enter the search for Basildon Sporting Superstars.
Guest competitors from Basildon's European twin towns of Heiligenhaus in Germany and Ville de Meaux in France will also be there.
Basildon Arts Week runs from 24-28 September and includes an exhibition of Basildon's young artistic talent from six local primary schools.
Pupils have taken inspiration from Basildon Town Centre and the local community to complete a series of paintings, drawings, photography, mixed media and sculpture.
In addition, pupils from selected schools have participated in six weeks of master classes working with a professional artist to develop their skills to create stunning and colourful pieces of work. They have worked in a variety of styles from pop art to African art learning new skills.
October will have a weekend of Japanese culture and traditional martial arts from 4–6 hosted at the Holiday Inn, Basildon. This is an official event of the Japan-UK Season of Culture 2019-2020, and has been held in Basildon for the last ten years.
