Town centre masterplan progresses

The sale of land in Nethermayne has been categorised as "unconditional" under Basildon Councilís masterplan for the town centre.

This means developer Redrow, as well as landowners – the Homes and Communities Agency and South Essex College – are legally bound to proceed with the sale.

Redrow will release funds to support the relocation of Basildon market to St Martin’s Square, where work has begun.

South Essex College will then create a new Basildon campus in the square, with a strong STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) influence in its curriculum and courses.

Anthony McGarel, deputy principal and chief executive of the college, said: “We can’t wait to bring much-needed further education facilities to the heart of Basildon.

“Our motivation is to develop first-class facilities for young people and adults in Basildon, in line with what employers need. We will not compromise on the quality of education we provide. The local community deserves the best and that is what we are going to deliver.

“Every day hundreds of students travel from Basildon to our Southend campus. While we welcome them there, it is vital that Basildon has its own state-of-the-art campus that inspires young people to succeed."

The first phase of the development in the town centre will see 181 homes built close to Basildon Hospital. Future projects include a new primary school, health centre and the expansion of St Luke’s Hospice.
