Contractor appointed for market development

A construction company has been appointed to develop Basildon's new market on St Martin's Square.

Romford-based Thomas Sinden will carry out plans for the relocation of the facilities from Market Square, where a new campus for South Essex College is being built.

The new market will provide 46 kiosks with electricity and water and 48 pop-up stalls.

Groundwork is due to start in January 2017, followed by the construction of a market service hub and the kiosks.

“This does feel like breaking the dam through which will flow a stream of work that will see Basildon’s town centre truly transformed and modernised,” said Councillor Phil Turner, leader of Basildon Council.

As well as the new market and the college campus, the town centre regeneration will see 181 homes built close to Basildon Hospital. Future projects include a new primary school, health centre and the expansion of St Luke’s Hospice.

Iain Bond from BTCM, the company managing the market, said: “We are excited that after several years’ hard work we have finally started on the building of the new market. We consider that this will be a vital part of the regeneration of the town, and good for market traders and customers alike.”

Work on the new market is schedule for completion by the end of 2017.
