Laindon Shopping Centre redevelopment approved

Plans to provide Laindon with hundreds of homes and a new High Street have been approved.

Basildon Council gave the go-ahead on 7 February to Swan Housing’s project for a retail-led redevelopment of the Laindon Shopping Centre.

The scheme, devised by Pollard Thomas Edwards and C.F. Møllers and submitted in November, includes 86 houses and 138 flats in a mix of one, two, three and four-bedroom homes, new retail space and parking.

A new health centre will also be delivered in partnership with the NHS, along with new landscaped public realm.

Swan plans to open a new office on the site, relocating its Essex operations from Billericay.

Enabling works will begin later this year, while construction for phase one is expected for early 2018.

Geoff Pearce, executive director of regeneration and development at Swan, called it a “momentous day for Laindon”.

“We’re excited to get the redevelopment work under way, hopefully by the end of this year,” he said, adding that Swan was “looking forward to investing further in the borough in the future”.

Talking exclusively to BaSE magazine, Pearce explained the decision to relocate Swan’s office from Billericay to the new development in Laindon and discussed the plans in details.
