Not just any new store…

Basildon Council has announced that it is will start looking for tenants to move into the retail site currently occupied by Marks and Spencer (M&S) in Basildon town centre, when the store closes in April.

After expressing disappointment with the closure, Gavin Callaghan, chairman of the council’s policy and resources committee, commended the town’s ongoing growth: "The future for Basildon town centre continues to look bright," he said.

"I am excited by the impending new market, by the progress on the cinema-led regeneration of East Square, the investment we have recently secured to support residential development and by other schemes that will improve footfall in the town centre, for example the planned relocation of a number of outpatient and diagnostic services into the town centre by Basildon Hospital and the new South Essex College Campus."

The council will enter discussions with M&S and the store’s landowner to secure the future use of the site.
