Independent cinema provider Empire Cinemas has been selected by Basildon Council to operate a new 10-screen cinema in East Square as part of the town's regeneration. The proposals include six units allocated for restaurant use as well as improvements to the look and feel of the square.
Empire Cinemas' successful bid to run the complex marks a milestone in the delivery of the council's plans for the town centre, which aim to boost the local economy.
It follows the relocation of Basildon Market to St Martin's Square, making way for South Essex College to bring its digital technology campus into nearby Market Square.
Justin Ribbons, chief executive of Empire Cinemas, called the project "exciting, innovative and forward-looking", and added: "We look forward to returning to Basildon and bringing our memorable cinema experience to East Square."
Tony Hedley, Basildon Council’s chairman of the regeneration committee, added: "Empire brings with it a wealth of experience in the cinema industry and it is a great opportunity to boost the local economy and provide new jobs for local people.
"We want East Square to be a destination of choice that is full of vitality and are committed to creating a vibrant town centre that has both a day and night-time economy."
