Basildon Heroes to be recognized

Nominations for inspiring business and community members are being sought to feature in an exhibition, as part of festivities for the town’s 70th anniversary this year.

The project called 70 Basildon Heroes will celebrate the milestone birthday at an exhibition at Eastgate Shopping Centre held throughout the year.

Basildon Council through a judging panel will select 70 heroes from the nominations, which can include individuals, businesses or community, voluntary, sports and cultural groups.

The individuals or groups will have contributed positively to the community and development of the town. They can also be educational institutions or students who have helped future generations of Basildon residents.

Basildon was one of eight “New Towns” officially created in 1949 by the government, in response to local concerns about the lack of amenities in the area.

Ian Clark, manager of Eastgate Shopping Centre, said: "We are proud to be supporting 70 Basildon Heroes and the 70th anniversary throughout the year.

"Eastgate has been at the heart of the town centre for nearly 40 years and in the last few years we have evolved to be just as much about supporting our community as retail with the art gallery, Gateway FM and Motivated Minds all based here."
