Thousands flock to new Eastgate opening

More than 3,500 shoppers went to the opening of JD Sports new 8,000 sq m "super shop" store at the Eastgate Shopping Centre in August.

The retailer relocated from JD’s shop in Basildon Town Square, which the company have been wanting to relocate and improve for several months.

The unit, spread over two floors, sells branded and own brand sports and casual wear such as Nike, Adidas and The North Face, alongside own brand labels including Supply & Demand and The Duffer of St George.

Eastgate manager Ian Clark said: “We are absolutely delighted to welcome JD to Eastgate after much anticipation over the last few weeks. The new store is large and stylish and will make a real impact in Eastgate.

“JD is always a big draw thanks to its wide appeal for shoppers looking for great sportswear and leading fashion. It’s a perfect fit for Eastgate and will be a real destination store for Basildon.”

JD manager, Emma Howell, said: “Our opening day was insanely busy – we had more than 3,500 people through the doors. It was such a great atmosphere. We had a DJ instore and breakdancers, a football freestyler and a female beatboxer – she was unbelievable.

“The new store looks amazing. It’s the newest JD shopfit and we have the latest footwear and clothing from the top brands that people will see on social media. We have a much bigger range than Basildon has had before.”

James Air, JD Group acquisitions manager, said: “Moving into Eastgate was an easy decision for us to make given the proven strength and popularity of the scheme.

“Our premium new store will replace the Town Square shop which we have been looking to relocate and improve from for some time.”
